Today I finally decided to go for a Nato strap on my watch.

I bought it during my lunch break at Uwe van Afferden, who runs a business for corporate and interior design and sells rugged menswear at his shop in Düsseldorf.

My Rolex is back, but...

Dear readers,
today I went to Rolex in Cologne to pick up my Sub.
Well, I had to pay 577 Euros for the revision and I must say, my Sub looks flawless.

No scratches and bumps (fixed by laser technology) anymore . The metal shines like it did years before. Amazing job, I must say.

Rolex gave me a little booklet (explaining all steps of the revision) and a little travel case, which will be quite helpful.

BUT:
I'm a perfectionist. I like symmetry.
So when I took a closer look at the triplock crown, I realised that it was tilted. It used to point at 12 o'clock and now it points at 2 o'clock. Doesn't matter, you think?

To me it does. For me, it's not perfect anymore. Ok, it glistens, but that's not enough.

I was asking the mechanic for the reasons and he told me there's no way to adjust the crown the way it was. Some technical reasons, screws, blabla, what ever...

So back at home I studied the booklet and noticed one sentence on the first page, saying something like "Rolex ensures that every Oyster leaving their workshops will have its original functional and aesthetic features".

Well guys, we put men on the moon, but we're not able to adjust that nasty triplock crown???

On Monday I'll call mechanics again. If they'll tell me the old story again, I'll write a letter to the managing director to learn about his idea of quality standards.

Am I crazy?


Back at my wrist.


The crown is tilted. It used to be at 12 o'clock. Now it's at 2 o'clock.
This is not what I've expected.

About Rolex - Part II

I received a letter from Rolex today.

They checked my Sub in detail and found out its oils and lubricants were nearly used up.

The only way to solve this issue is a revision.

Expenditure: 577,15 Euros.

That's what I expected.

Oh dear!

About Rolex

I bought my Rolex Submariner Date on a saturday in april 2007. It was the watch of my dreams since I was 18 or 20. But always way too much money to spend. Until that day.

You can imagine how excited I was when I walked right into the store, announced my request and walked out with this precious timepiece.

Years gone by and it never let me down. I kept in on my wrist at work, while passing security checks at airports, at home, on the beach, in the ocean, while running and only put if off when I went to bed.

But it always was some minutes fast in one week, so I had to correct it from time to time.
It did not mean a thing to me, because there wasn't any doubt because of its chronometer certificate.


Then came the day (I guess one month ago) when I put it on in the morning, realizing the hands stood still. After some shaking, life came back into my Sub, but still I knew something was wrong with it.

So the week before Christmas, I let my Sub check by some high-class jeweler on Kö. The guy with the magnifying glass told me, that there was a divergence (is that the right word?) in the clockwork. Too bad!

So today I went to Germany's Rolex headquarters in Cologne for maintenance.
The master watchmaker told me, that he had no clue what was wrong with the movement and that he wanted to check it in detail. And after that he'll send me a cost estimate.

I mean: What? A cost estimate? Rolex want me to pay for maintenance on a 4 year old expensive watch because there's something wrong with it? Maybe since I bought it?

Are you serious?


I'll tell you how this story will end in a few weeks.
